Connecting across continents: how Facebook groups are changing solo travel

The world has become more interconnected than ever before, and social media platforms have transformed our travelling experiences. Amidst the vast sea of online communities, Facebook groups stand out as virtual hubs where like-minded travellers connect to share experiences, seek advice, and forge friendships across continents. It creates pathways to get real-time advice and recommendations, build communities, and even navigate the world more safely.

My favourites are all woman based groups, each with thousands of amazing followers who are more than happy to offer advice, compliments, and even hospitality for when the unexpected occurs.

Gals Who Travel

With a global membership of like-minded female travellers, the group serves as a supportive community where women can share travel tips, recommendations, and personal experiences. From solo adventurers to group excursions, members engage in lively discussions, organise meetups, and foster lasting friendships.

Solo Female Travelers

A dynamic online community dedicated to empowering women who travel alone. With a membership that spans the globe, the group offers a platform for solo female travellers to share their experiences, seek advice, and connect with like-minded individuals. Members engage in discussions about safety tips, destination recommendations, and personal anecdotes, fostering a sense of camaraderie among women exploring the world independently.

Host A Sister

My personal favourite, this group facilitates connections between women who are seeking accommodation during their travels and those willing to host them. Members offer their homes, couches, or spare rooms to fellow female travellers, as well as participating in The Holiday inspired house swaps. Whether it’s for a night or an extended stay, the group provides a safe and welcoming environment for women to stay and build friendships while exploring new destinations. There are even variations of the group, such as ‘Host a Vegan Sister’ and ‘Host a Sister Pet Sitting’.

These groups embodies the spirit of sisterhood in the travel community, and are a powerful tool for both getting the most out of your travelling and having a safety net for those ‘what ifs’.

Get connected, the opportunities are endless…
